How to Prepare Your Skin for a Tattoo
A great tattoo starts with a healthy canvas. In the weeks leading up to your appointment, begin giving the area a little extra care. Keep your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and regularly applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. You can also lightly exfoliate the area once or twice a week to help remove dry, dead skin and keep the surface smooth. Use a gentle exfoliant and avoid excessive scrubbing—you are trying to maintain healthy skin, not irritate it. As your appointment gets closer, discontinue exfoliating for several days so the skin has plenty of time to settle.
Protecting the area from the sun is equally important. Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds in the weeks before your appointment, and never arrive with sunburned, peeling, or irritated skin. You should also avoid aggressive skin treatments such as chemical peels, strong exfoliating acids, or waxing close to your appointment. If you have scratches, rashes, significant irritation, or another skin issue in the area being tattooed, contact your artist before your appointment. Healthy, intact skin is much easier to work with and provides a better foundation for your tattoo.
On the day of your tattoo, shower and gently clean the area with mild soap, but do not exfoliate immediately beforehand. Unless your artist has specifically instructed you otherwise, you can also leave shaving to them. Avoid applying heavy lotions, body oils, perfumes, self-tanners, or other products to the tattoo area before arriving. Wear clean, loose, comfortable clothing that allows your artist easy access to the area and will not excessively rub against your fresh tattoo afterward.
Preparing your skin is only part of preparing for a tattoo—take care of the rest of your body too. Get a good night’s sleep, eat a substantial meal before your appointment, and come well hydrated. Avoid alcohol before your session and follow any additional instructions provided by your tattoo artist. A little preparation in the weeks leading up to your appointment can make a meaningful difference: healthy, hydrated, gently cared-for skin gives your artist the best possible canvas and helps set your tattoo up for a smooth healing process.
